Tribute to My Son: Winston “Dub” F. Dorian, II ( Jan 24, 1991 – Apr 23, 2012)

This Blog was founded and inspired by those I served with and knew in the United States Marine Corps who lost their lives in service to our Country and for a deep rooted love for our 2nd Amendment Rights.

Unfortunately now I have to add my beloved son to the above.  Winston F. Dorian II left this world on April, 23rd 2012.  He was 21 years old and committed suicide as the result of his struggle with an awful and cruel disease called Schizophrenia.

“Dub” as we affectionaetly called him was an amazing young man even after he became ill.  He never lost his passion for life even after it was clear that he was mentally ill.  He was an NROTC scholarship cadet at The Citadel and shot on their Rifle Team.  He received varsity letters for shooting both his freshman “knob” and sophomore years.  He was instrumental in helping The Citadel’s Rifle Team to win the SEARC Conference Title in over 10 years.

He was beloved by all who knew him.

His college roommate (Will Mims, Jr. the son of one of my classmates at The Citadel Will Mims, Sr. ’86) for 2 years said: “I’ve never known a happier person”.  That was Dub!  He lived and loved life like no one I have ever known.  He was an amazing son to raise and I feel blessed to have had him in my life for 21 years and to have known him.

For almost 21 years, as he started shooting from the time he was 3 years old; we shot, hunted, fished and shared a passionate love of all things shooting and firearms related.  The last hunting trip that we went on together was a pig hunt in Texas on a friends lease on Oct 16th, 2011 where he shot a  wild hog at 2AM under a full moon with no artificial light with a 6.8 SPC AR-15 that I built and had coated in USMC Digi Camo.  That was Dub….he was such a great shooter!  He loved that rifle! I later put the rifle up and looked through the scope to gauge and see how difficult that shot would have been.  I could barely make out anything at 200 yds with the reduced light.  The picture of Dub below I took of him on that hunt…..our last one together.

In honor of my beloved son this blog will continue to fight the good fight for all gun loving and 2nd Amendment supporters who realize and know that our constitutional rights continue to be be threatened and eroded by “Blooming Idiots” like Michael Bloomberg and many others.  I will continue to do everything in my power to educate and expose younger people to the shooting sports and firearms so they too can realize & experience the long history and traditions of firearm ownership that this country has afforded multiple generations.

Below is the memorial video that we played at this funeral and memorial service.

We have also set up a scholarship fund in his name to award high school JROTC cadets with money for post high school education.  We are also in the process of converting this fund into  a 501 (c) 3 organization so all donations will be tax deductible.

God Bless you Dub!  God Bless America!  God Bless our 2nd Amendment and keep it Strong, Viable and Vibrant for many generations to come!

Thank you for sharing your story. I am sure it is helpful to others in this situation. God bless you and your family.

  2. Leslie Bott (Michael Lazar) says:

My son is in Tango Company and when I heard of your loss my heart ached for you and your wife. I just wanted you to know that I have kept you both in my daily prayers. May God bless and hold you close to Him. Wish there was something else I could do. I would bring your beloved son back to you if I could, but of course I cannot. So I will continue to pray.
And thank you for your support of our 2nd Amendment.

  3. Hi Leslie,
Thanks for stopping by and for your comments and prayers! Thanks also for contributing to Dub’s scholarship fund. We are excited about the opportunity to help kids going off to school in Dub’s name. So far we have raised over $8,000 from generous people like yourself. Thanks so much! We are working hard to get things in place to be able to give in the spring for next fall semester.
    Thanks Again
