California Man put under 72-hour Psychiatric Observation for Owning 100 Guns

You may have heard on the news about a southern California man that was put under 72-hour psychiatric observation when it was found that he owned 100 guns and allegedly had (by rough estimate) 1 million rounds of ammunition stored in his home. The house also featured a secret escape tunnel.

My favorite quote from the dimwit television reporter: “Wow! He has …. about a million machine gun bullets.” The headline referred to it as a “massive weapons cache.” BTW, I am dubious about the pile of ammunition boxes and cans that they showed. It looked big enough to contain no more than about 100,000 rounds, unless there was a lot of .22 rimfire ammo.

However, by southern California standards, even someone owning 100,000 rounds would be called “mentally unstable. Just imagine if he lived elsewhere:

In Arizona, . .. . he’d be called “an avid gun collector.”

In Texas, . .. . he’d be called “a novice gun collector.”

In Utah, . .. .he’d be called “moderately well prepared,” but they’d probably reserve judgment until they made sure that he had a corresponding quantity of stored food.

In Montana, . .. .he’d be called “The neighborhood ‘Go-To’ guy.”

In Idaho, . . . he’d be called “a likely gubernatorial candidate.”

And . . . in South Dakota, . . . he’d be called “an eligible bachelor.”

Now, Winston, we shouldn’t be editing the story to our own ends. They said a million rounds, you can’t change that to 100,000 in order to make a point. And the tunnel? C’mon, man, the guy was a lunatic. I’ll bet there were other indications of instability. You wanna bet?

Why do you defend any and all gun owners? You’re hurting your own cause.

    • Keith says:

      Ok, Mike, Really?
you think just because he had some ammo and a tunnel he’s a lunatic? I know quite a few people that have much much more than this guy does including underground hidden shelters,1000’s of lbs of food and more. People like you who think, ahhhh, this is the United States, nothing will ever happen here are living in a fantasy world. So, when your grocery stores are empty, your gas stations are empty, your kitchen is empty, you will wish you had done the same as you are starving to death. When you see muslims running through the streets slaughtering everything that moves and gangs raiding houses for food and money, you will say, gosh I guess I should have bought a gun. More than likely people like you will only have confussion and say they dont understand what is happening. Let the cards fall where they may.

there is a property in the town I live in that is a ‘seasonal/vacation’ home… well away from any ‘resort’ or ‘seasonal recreational activity’ of any kind…. the only difference between the above described man and my neighbor is that my neighbor is a high level employee of a fortune 500 company and “In the know” on geopolitical goings on. His property has 4 10,000 gal underground propane storage tanks, 1 (soon to be 3) 10,000 underground diesel tanks….. 18in thick basement walls. Said basement contains movable shelving units with multiple 5gal pails of food stores/ammo/etc, generator that is multi-muffled for stealth. the property is multi-acres, mostly wooded with perimeter fencing and enough open area for a heli-pad and about 5-7 acres of available planting. SO… I guess the only difference between the two is the available wealth and lack of a tunnel………..

    • Mike- I would be willing to bet if the man had shown and mental instability or aggression the authorities would have it up in neon lights. Do I think the tunnel and that much ammo is strange? Yes. But I also think homosexuality is strange. Should their rights be violated too? You can’t pick and choose weirdness if he didn’t break a law.

    • Larry Poke says:

I’m sorry, Mike but you couldn’t be any more wrong when you classify this man as a lunatic, not only clinically, but socially. Call him paranoid if you must but remember that it’s our vigilance and preparedness that will keep us free. If a man wants to collect guns and ammunition and dig tunnels on his own property, that’s HIS business and none of ours. In case you haven’t noticed, our government is gearing up for possible insurrection by the very citizens who “elected” them. They are the only people who deserve close mental scrutiny.

    • Gordon says:

So Mike, tell us what exactly he did wrong. What laws did he break?

    • DigitalDiva says:

Oh PLEASE! California is denying the man his rights and he has grounds to sue the state. I know lots and lots of guys with more than 100 guns and lots of ammo. Most folks with a little extra money have these things. Nothing wrong at all with guns. It’s people that want to take away rights that scares me. We used to want to defend to the death someone’s right to free speech even if we disagreed. Not anymore. So comes the death of democracy at the hands of those who don’t wont understand until it’s lost.

Is there a link to the original story? Google and Bing results all show the same thing you posted, “You may have heard on the news … ” with no links.

“More than 100 guns confiscated from man who allegedly exposed himself at Glendora Wal-Mart”. Seems the psych types don’t approve of nuts waving their personal “guns” at women and kids at wally world. Unfortunately sometimes the ones that get the publicity actually are the nuts.

  7. William C. Field says:

You have got to remember 1 thing and it’s the most important.
If Big Brother get’s their big ole foot in the door they won’t stop at that it will only allow them more control.
Tyranny is just the beginning, it will get worse if it is allowed and by allowing the GOV to come into your home just because you own ” TOO MANY” guns and ammo…
“IT’S OUR RIGHT” Remember the 2nd Amendment??? Anyone, or are we just letting Big Brother do whatever they want and we the people just shrug it off.

If your not a gun owner or believe in the Bill of Rights “YOU” have no voice, so stay out of it.

Considering todays prices, I would call the guy Warren Buffet, or at least a shrewd investor.

  9. Russ says:

I often wonder what sorts of lists I might be on due to firearm or bulk ammo purchases. Another reason to leave California!

  10. Watchman on His wall says:

If you’re here during the Tribulation period, then all the weapons, ammo, food, underground bunkers, etc will not do you any good. It’s best to be prepared to not be here during those times. How? Trust in Jesus Christ.
Romans 10:9-11: that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be [d]disappointed.”

    • Chris Palmer says:

I’m prepared for that day, but what happens when things go haywire before the Tribulation period? I’m not going to have my freedoms and basic human rights stripped from me and my family before that day, and I’m prepared to make sure they don’t.

BEIJING (AP) — Authorities in southwestern China on Tuesday executed three men convicted of masterminding a knife attack a year ago that killed 31 people outside a railway station in the city of Kunming.
Iskandar Ehet, Turgun Tohtunyaz and Hasayn Muhammad were put to death after China’s Supreme Court upheld their convictions for the crimes of murder and organizing and leading a terrorist organization, the Kunming City Intermediate People’s Court said in a notice.
Five knife-wielding assailants hacked 31 people to death and injured 141 on March 1, 2014, an act of violence that shook the country as tensions between the Uighur Muslim minority and the majority Han ethnic group spread beyond the Uighurs’ homeland of Xinjiang.
Four of the assailants were shot dead at the scene and the fifth, a pregnant woman, Patigul Tohti, was captured alive and later sentenced to life in prison on the charges of joining a terror group and murder.
Authorities said Ehet, Tohtunyaz and Muhammad were arrested two days before the attack while attempting to flee across the Chinese border. Having lost contact with the three men, the other five members of the group mounted the attack as planned, the Kunming court said.
Beijing has blamed Uighur separatists and religious fanatics for a spate of recent violence that has caused hundreds of deaths over the past year.
Critics say heavy-handed Chinese rule and economic disenfranchisement have pushed some Uighurs toward extremism.
Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Germany-based World Uyghur Congress, said he did not believe the defendants had a fair trial. “China is evading the root cause for the problem through the political means of the death sentence,” Dilxat Raxit said. “The defendants were not granted a dignified trial.”

    • Randall Smith says:

A thousand rounds of ammo is no biggie, 100 guns, says he’s a collector, an escape tunnel is the equivalent of a panic room but without being trapped in one.

  14. Brian Banks says:

The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution affirms the American Citizen’s Right to Bear Arms, as well as possess and stockpile ammo and self-defense supplies. It does not limit in any way the number of arms or amount of ammunition a citizen may stockpile. Nor does it permit the seizure of those weapons and supplies because the individual commits a crime.
it is certainly a criminal offense If an individual exposed himself to minors and others. He should be arrested, charged, prosecuted, and if convicted in a court of law, appropriately punished. But the state shall not violate his Constitutional Rights nor seize his Personal Protective Equipment!
